Braised Chicken Breast

There are lots of different braised chicken breast recipes out there, and this is the version that’s common in Poland. I cannot say if it’s a traditional Polish recipe, but definitely, it’s a popular one!

It’s a great idea for an easy midweek meal that you can cook after a long day at work. I love how quick it is to make!

The chicken breast is tender and juicy and the creamy sauce is delicate and smooth. When you add to it green peas and carrots, it’just a perfect meal. So comforting!

It’s terrific served with mashed potatoes, but it’s just as gorgeous with some rustic bread. Just think about soaking up all this delicious sauce!

The best part? You just need a few basic ingredients to make it!

What you need

This braised chicken breast recipe calls with everyday ingredients that you find in a regular supermarket. I love such simple recipes!

PS. Simple doesn’t mean tasteless! This chicken dish is rich and flavorful.

Here’s what you’ll need to prepare it:

  • Chicken breast – chicken or turkey breast works the best here. You can also use boneless, skinless chicken thighs.
  • Onion and garlic – basics.
  • Carrot and fresh or frozen green peas – veggies for the sauce.
  • Heavy cream – just a bit!
  • Broth – the best would be chicken broth, but beef or vegetable one is good too. I always try to make my own broth, but you can use store-bought or even a bouillon cube.
  • Seasoning – fresh, finely chopped dill or parsley, paprika powder, bay leaves, allspice berries, salt, and pepper. Curry powder works here too! It’s awesome!
  • Butter and oil – for frying.

Now, let’s see how to make it.

How to make juicy braised chicken breast

I love this recipe because it’s simple and fast to make. I mean really fast – it’ll be ready in less than 20 minutes!

The meal is made in one pan which means that all the flavors stay and there’s not a lot of things to wash after (yay!!).

You can serve it with mashed potatoes, bread, rice, or any other grains you like. Pasta will work too! There’s a lot of yummy, creamy sauce!

Here’s the overview of the process:

  1. Cut and lightly pound the chicken breast. Season with salt and pepper. Sear the chicken both sides and remove from the pan. You can make it more or less brown – up to you!
  2. Add chopped onion and cook until soft.
  3. Then add garlic and carrot and cook for a moment.
  4. Add peas, broth, and transfer the chicken back. Simmer energetically for 10 minutes uncovered. You can flip the chicken from time to time.
  5. Add heavy cream and simmer for 5 minutes more.
  6. Serve!

Popular questions

Can I braise chicken breast in the oven?

Sure! Add broth and cream and the same time, then transfer everything to the oven preheated to 180 Celsius degrees. Bake for 20-25 minutes.

Can I braise chicken thighs or drumsticks?

The best idea would be to use boneless, skinless chicken thighs for this recipe. If you want to use bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs or drumsticks, you’ll need to simmer (or bake) the chicken for around 1 hour total.

Can I make the braised chicken ahead of time and reheat it before serving?

Sure! This chicken reheats well. You can reheat it in the same pan/skillet you used to cook the dish or in the microwave.

Can I use different type of meat?

You can substitute chicken with turkey or pork chops.

How to serve braised chicken breast?

It’s especially delicious with mashed potatoes or bread. But rice, pasta, and other grains will work too! A simple salad on the side is totally optional.

Can I freeze it?

I wouldn’t recommend freezing anything with dairy in it.
