Polish Potato Soup With Bacon (And Apples!)

I love soups and this potato soup is one of my favorites. Not only because it’s a Polish recipe, but mostly because it’s one of the best potato soups I’ve ever had. It’s full of flavor!

Plus, it’s super simple to make and you can get all the ingredients in a regular supermarket. Who doesn’t like recipes like that!? 🙂

If you like potato soup, you have to try this one! You’ll be surprised how tasty it is. 🙂

This is a classic Polish recipe for potato soup with bacon. The soup is made with potatoes, apples, smoked bacon and seasoned with nutmeg and herbs like dried marjoram, oregano, or fresh salvia. Forget bland, boring potato soup, this one is far, far from that!

The 2 ingredients that make this soup unique and seriously delicious are apples and nutmeg. Sour apples combine perfectly with potatoes, and freshly grated nutmeg makes the soup super aromatic and flavorful! So good!

How to make potato soup

The recipe for Polish Potato Soup With Bacon (And Apples!) is very easy! You don’t need any special skills to prepare it and it’s a very forgiving dish.

Here’s all you need to do:

  1. Saut̩ the ingredients Рone by one.
  2. Add broth and bring to boil.
  3. Simmer until potatoes are fall-apart soft.
  4. Add cream and bring to boil again.
  5. Blend everything together until the soup is silky creamy and smooth.

That’s it! Simple, right? 🙂

Don’t worry if you don’t have a blender, you can totally make this soup without it! I’ll skip apples for this version though.

What you need

Speaking about apples, here’s what you need to make this delicious polish potato soup:

  1. Potatoes – you can choose any potatoes you like. I especially like to make this soup with starchy potatoes.
  2. Apples – one of the secrets to the aromatic, silky potato soup. Choose sour, tart apples like granny smith apples.
  3. Onion and garlic – basics.
  4. Smoked bacon – fried in the pot before adding potatoes and apples, then removed and reserved for topping. The bacon makes the gorgeous, flavorful baseIt really makes the difference!
  5. Broth – chicken or vegetable. It can be homemade, store-bought, or made from a bouillon cube.
  6. Cream – for the richness and creaminess. It can be substituted with a bit of evaporated milk.
  7. Nutmeg and marjoram – classic seasoning of Polish potato soup. So good! Adding a few leaves of fresh salvia is terrific too! Marjoram can be substituted with oregano if needed.
  8. Smoked paprika – totally optional. I like to add it to intensify the smokey flavor.

Now, let’s talk about toppings! A few classic options – reserved crispy bacon, chopped chives, chopped fresh parsley, a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg or black pepper, a dollop of cream – go with what you like!

So when are you going to make your pot of this gorgeous soup? 🙂

I do like potatoes and this sounds good. Only one problem. We don’t eat bacon. I am hoping to be able to make it with some other type of meat. MAybe turkey ham or chicken sausage. What do you think?

Sure! You can skip it or use another type of meat 🙂 It is also delicious with smoked salmon, added just on top while serving.

Yes! Only recently have we discovered apples in soup. And combining them with bacon is a great idea (we may add bacon to our apple crumble on occasion…) This recipe sounds great! Thanks so much for sharing!
