These Cheese-Stuffed Venezuelan Arepas are full of gooey, stretchy melted cheese. SO GOOD! All you need to enjoy these tasty fried corn cakes are 4 ingredients and a few minutes! Absolutely delicious.
Combine arepa flour and salt in a medium bowl. Add warm water. Using a wooden spoon (or hand) stir until no dry lumps remain. Let it rest for 5 minutes.
Knead dough 2-3 times in the bowl, then divide into 8 pieces.
Form a ball from each piece, then flatten. Place a portion of cheese in the center of each patty.
Fold the dough over the cheese, making sure the cheese is completely covered and sealed.
Pat it back down.
Heat oil in a large nonstick pan over medium heat. Add arepas, cover, and cook until golden brown, 6–8 minutes each side.
After frying, I usually transfer arepas to the preheated oven for around 15 minutes with some additional cheese on top. It's optional, but I like this melted cheese on top and even more crispier crust.
